If you suspect you have some hearing loss, contact an audiologist for a professional hearing assessment. Hearing loss can occur at any age and for many reasons. In adults, however, one of the most common periods for hearing loss to begin is between ages 40 and 55 years.

Surprisingly, you may not be aware if you have a hearing impairment. Some forms of hearing loss are very mild and may only involve difficulty in hearing certain sounds or hearing in specific situations. Additionally, some types of hearing loss may occur so gradually that they progress without your notice.

Children should be seen by an audiologist without delay if parents suspect any hearing problem. Immediate attention is critical to ensure both hearing health and proper speech and language evelopment.

Children can be evaluated at any age, including the newborn. In the absence of any specific problems, parents may wish to have their children’s hearing evaluated during the preschool years. Thereafter, their hearing should be rechecked periodically throughout their school years.

What to Do If You Think You Have a Hearing Loss

See an audiologist for a full audiological evaluation to determine the degree and extent of your hearing loss and what assistance is available to you. There are many ways that a hearing loss may be helped, including:

  • Hearing Aids
  • Assistive Listening Devices
  • Audiological rehabilitation, including:
    • speech reading
    • auditory training
    • communication skills techniques

If your hearing loss requires medical intervention, a referral to your family physician or ear specialist will be made.
